Pregnancy & Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is an essential ingredient to your pre-natal care choices. A large percent of all pregnant women experience back discomfort/ pain during pregnancy. This is due to the rapid growth of the baby and an interference to your body's normal structural adaptations to that growth. Pre-existing unnoticed imbalances in your spine and pelvis become overtaxed during these times. The added stresses lead to discomfort and difficulty while performing routine, daily activities.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and even prevent the common discomforts experienced in pregnancy. Specific adjustments eliminate these stresses in your spine, restore balance to your pelvis and result in greater comfort and lifestyle.

Research has shown that chiropractic may lessen labor pain by shortening the duration of labor. According to a study presented at the World Chiropractic Congress, first time mothers who receive chiropractic care average 24 percent shorter labor times than women who are not under chiropractic care. And, chiropractic patients who have had previous children enjoy 39 percent shorter labors compared with control subjects.

Women who experience back pain throughout pregnancy often suffer back pain during delivery. However expectant mothers who receive chiropractic care are less likely to battle backache during delivery.(J Manip Phys Ther 1991;14:116-8)

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved. In a theoretical and clinical framework of the Webster Technique in the care of pregnant women, sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e. dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contractions, and baby malpresentation. The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia. Not every chiropractor is certified in this technique so it is important to check with your provider.

Dr. Janelle Sturtz has had advanced training in prenatal chiropractic care and practices the Webster Technique on her expecting patients. Additionally Dr. Janelle is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association which enables her to stay up to date with and participate in the latest research on Chiropractic and Pregnancy.
